Just Say NO to the Music Genome Project
Pandora / Spoitfy Radio / Tidal are gifts given to the world at little to no cost. When it comes to making the beast with two backs, however, they are the enemy. You can customize playlists to a certain degree, but these programs are like Bonsai trees: They require constant pruning to stay awesome. Stick with a pre-made playlist for certainty.
Is it Ska?
Hey, I love ska. A lot. Sadly, high energy music like ska and punk isn’t the best choice for lovemaking tuneage (see “Rhythm Nation 2015”) even if you love the music at other times. Take it off and leave The Specials for your “Pre-Game with the Posse” mix.
Know Your Audience
Like people, these playlists are not one-size-fits-most. Total metal head? Sensitive folk-y barista? Nooner? Late night rendezvous? Each will suggest a different sonic experience. Make sure you’re thinking of the context when you build your playlists.
Respect
The art of creating a sexy times playlist is just that – an art. This is not a mixtape and we are no longer in middle school. This is the serious, awkward business of lovemaking. When you sit down at your computer / portable music device / CD collection to begin this process, thank those that came before you and have passed on their successes and failures in similar endeavors.
