The 12 Greatest Sex Symbols of the 20th Century

Everyone needs role models — people we can look up to and emulate such as world leaders, brain surgeons, architectural geniuses, mathematical wizards, artists, rocket scientists, writers … sex symbols.

Keeping up with Kim Kardashian’s naked body seems to be on everyone’s to-do list. (Why else would she pose in her birthday suit every other week if we didn’t LOOK?) Sex symbols are adorable. We have our favorites including Jessica Simpson, Kate Upton, Jennifer Lopez, Penelope Cruz and Gisele Bundchen, just to name a few.

For the record, we’re not just now discovering sex symbols. They’ve been around for centuries (most likely since 50 BC; think Cleopatra) so let’s take a look at some women who blazed the modern trail back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s when breasts became a national obsession and Playboy magazine was every man’s dirty little secret. Women have come a long way baby. BUT, men are still apparently driven by bosoms. So here are 12 original sex symbols we can thank for setting those booby traps (with one exception in the mix).

Marilyn Monroe
marilyn monroe sex symbol
Marilyn Monroe is an erotic-sex-symbol legend for good reason. Besides being featured in the inaugural issue of “Playboy” magazine, becoming their first “Sweetheart of the Month,” (changed to “Playmate of the Month thereafter) in the 1953 December issue of the (then) controversial magazine, the “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” actress became the first serious “dumb blonde.” Monroe’s beauty and sensual persona created quite the stir when she sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to President John F. Kennedy at a celebration for his 45th birthday. Check it out here. Shockingly, the “Some Like It Hot” actress died on Aug. 5, 1962 at the age of 36.

Jayne Mansfield
jayne mansfield
Jayne Mansfield, who became one of Hollywood’s original blonde bombshells, also played up the “dumb blonde” image and became known in some circles as the “working man’s Monroe.” The popular 1950s/1960s sex symbol enjoyed success on the Broadway stage (“Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?”) as well as in Hollywood movies (“The Girl Can’t Help It”). Fun trivia: “Mansfield claimed a 41-inch bust line and a 22-inch waist when she made her Broadway debut in 1955… She was known as the Cleavage Queen.” Married three times with five children (actress Mariska Hargitay is her forth child), Mansfield sadly was killed in a car accident on June 29, 1967 at the age of 34.

Raquel Welch
raquel welch
Raquel Welch was among the most iconic sex symbols of the 60s and 70s, which put her on the top of some pretty sexy lists: According to Wikipedia “Welch was chosen byEmpire Magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History. Playboy Magazine named Welch no. 3 on their 100 Sexiest Stars of the Twentieth Century list. In 2011,Men’s Health Magazine ranked her no. 2 in its Hottest Women of All Time list.” The 74-year-old actress still struts her stuff on red carpets, serving notice that women in their 70s still rock!

Brigitte Bardot
brigitte bardot
It’s hard to believe that Brigitte Bardot, the former “sex kitten,” is 80! The sensual French model, actress, singer and animal rights activist became a high-profile sex symbol in the 50s and 60s largely due to her first husband, director Roger Vadim (who would later marry Jane Fonda), who showcased her in the 1956 movie “And God Created Woman.” Although the marriage didn’t last, her career did for many years, until her retirement from the entertainment industry in 1973. Some actresses are immediately recognized by their first names. Bardot was known by her two initials: BB.

Lana Turner

Actress Lana Turner’s sweaters should have had their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The “Imitation of Life” actress was one of the first well-known beauties who made a fashion statement by wearing a tight sweater to showcase her bust line, thus earning the nickname “the sweater girl” (a nickname she reportedly detested).Turner capitalized on her curvy figure throughout her career. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1957 film, “Peyton Place.”

Gina Lollobrigida
gina lollobrigida
This Italian actress, who was one of the highest profile European actresses of the 50s and 60s, wasn’t afraid to show off her full figure when a film called for a voluptuous actress. The 87-year-old actress appeared in films with the likes of Yul Brenner, Frank Sinatra, Rock Hudson, Anthony Quinn and Burt Lancaster. Humphrey Bogart once said: “Gina makes Marilyn Monroe look like Shirley Temple.” Momma Mia!

Ann-Margret
actress ann margaret
Ann-Margret has been described as both the “girl next door” and “sex kitten.” The 73-year-old actress, singer and dancer is best known for her roles in “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Viva Las Vegas” (where she and Elvis tore up the screen with sex appeal!), “The Cincinnati Kid,” and for one of her most voluptuous roles, in “Carnal Knowledge.” So, how sexy was she? She was once described as the “female version of Elvis Presley.” The red-head from Valsjöbyn, Sweden always spoke with a soft, sexy, demur tone that defined her massive sex appeal. Check it out here.

Elizabeth Taylor
elizabeth taylor
Elizabeth Taylor became one of the most famous film actresses of all time and was considered one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the big screen. Her sex appeal didn’t go unnoticed in movies like “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” and “Cleopatra.” Taylor was somehow able to pull off a combination of the strong woman image mixed with her vivacious on-screen sex appeal.

Sophia Loren
sophia loren
Was there a man in this universe who didn’t drool at the sight of this Italian sex symbol in the 50s, 60s and beyond? Her soft Italian accent just fueled the sensual sparks she emitted on screen and off. Her hourglass figure didn’t hurt her image either, and her acting talent made her sexy persona even more enticing. Loren earned an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1962 for the film “Two Women.” The sexy octogenarian is 80 and single. Gentlemen, start your engines!

Jacqueline Bisset
jacqueline bisset
Wet t-shirt Alert. Just in case you’ve forgotten who started the wet t-shirt craze, look no further. After wooing audiences in the late 60s/early 70s with various film roles, Bisset decided it was time to grab some serious attention from American audiences by swimming underwater wearing only a t-shirt for a top in “The Deep,” helping to make the film a box office success. Producer Peter Guber reportedly said, “That t-shirt made me a rich man.” That little stunt led many to credit her with popularizing the wet t-shirt contest.”

Ursula Andress
ursula andress
Honey. Honey Ryder. 1962 was her year. The “Dr. No” actress became the first “Bond Girl” and made her wet bikini screen entrance a sight to behold in what “became aniconic moment in cinematic and fashion history when she rose out of the Caribbean Sea in a white bikini sporting a large diving knife on her hip.” The bikini never had a better introduction, and we’re betting the 78-year-old actress could still make waves.

Farrah Fawcett
farrah fawcett
Finally. It was all about the hair! No one in the history of entertainment was more famous for a head of hair than Farrah Fawcett. The “Charlie’s Angels” actress became a household name in 1976 after taking on the role of Jill Monroe in the hit ABC TV series. And then there was The Poster! Pro Arts Inc. pitched the idea of a FF poster to the star’s agent, and you know the rest of the story. That poster went on to become the best selling poster of its time, selling over 20 million copies. Now that’s one sexy angel.

Are You Falling in Love or Lust?

Are you tripping into infatuation or allowing time for real love to develop? Infatuation involves a projection of own needs, hopes, and dreams. While real love cares about the well being of others and not just their own desires.

Is it Love or Something Else?

Ever wondered if you were truly in love, or truly in lust?

Did you know that falling in love actually happens over time, and the journey from initial attraction to deep romantic love is a predictable course that depends on many different factors?

Love is an intense feeling of affection toward another person. It’s a profound and caring attraction that forms emotional attachment.

On the flip side, lust is a strong desire of a sexual nature that is based on physical attraction. Lust can transform into deep romantic love, but it usually takes time.

Two individuals will transform their lust into love when they get to see the whole individual (their strengths and weaknesses) and get past the “fantasy level.

Dr. Helen Fisher, a well-known researcher on the topic of romantic love, has identified three stages to falling in love in her excellent book Why Him? Why Her?: How to Find and Keep Lasting Love and I’ve been inspired by her research in writing this post.

Which stage are you at?

Stage 1: Lust

Lust is the first stage of falling in love. It’s driven by desire. The sex hormones play an important role in this stage. According to experts, this stage may begin immediately and can last up to two years.

Signs that you’re in lust:

  • You’re focused on the physical appearance of the object of your desire.
  • There is a strong desire to have sex, but not deep emotional conversations.
  • You’d rather keep the relationship on a fantasy level, not discuss real feelings.
  • You are lovers, but not necessarily friends.

Stage 2: Attraction

This is the “love-struck” phase. When you spend hours daydreaming about your lover; when you lose sleep or your appetite, you know you’re in this phase. The neurohormones that play an important role in the attraction or infatuation phase are dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These are the hormones that send our heart racing, and might actually make us feel like we are going insane.

How To Cheat Without Cheating

If you have a cheatin’ heart but don’t want to act on it, here’s how to stop an affair before it starts.

Do you fantasize about secret hook-ups and flings? Are you disappointed by the emotional distance between you and your long-term partner? “Boredisappointment” is a word I’ve invented (just now, actually!) to describe those afflictions of relationship boredom — with a garnish of dashed hopes and dreams.

If you find this feeling all-too-familiar, say it with me: “I suffer from boredisappointment.”

Note that we didn’t say, “they gave me boredisappointment.” The key phrase here is “I suffer.” What you don’t want to do here (take it from me) is to blame your partner for all of it. Sure, they may have had the cold first and then passed the germs on to you. Or they’re just so damn noisy that now you’ve got a bad headache. Or maybe your partner was boredisappointed long before the thought entered your mind.

Whatever the reason, these are your feelings and they should be dealt with. Thankfully, and just as with any headache, cold, or food poisoning bout, there are things you can do (yourself) for relief.

The first step to overcoming infidelity is admitting you’re tempted to cheat. After that comes the fun part!

“What?” you ask. “What fun part? I’m about to destroy my ten-year marriage with the pretzel guy from Costco!”

Hold on now, Brenda. Put down the cheese dip and zip up your fly. You can learn how to stop an affair from happening by leaning into the feelings of cheating without actually doing it. Let’s take a look at four options that can do just that.

1. Cheat on your partner… by having a “naughty” sleepover with your platonic best friend.

Throw a “self-care” night with your closest platonic (emphasis on platonic) best friend, and soak up the sinfulness of it all. Junk food, face masks, roses and candles, confessions, whatever — do what you wish someone else would do for you.

Your romantic partner can’t meet every need in your life. This is why friendships exist. It’s unnecessarily painful to depend on one person for every aspect of your emotional well-being — not to mention unrealistic. But there are ways to get your emotional needs met without ruining your partner’s life. Gush over the grocery boy with your bestie and there’s no harm done. Letting the grocery boy gush on you, well… that’s what’s we’d like to avoid.

Pro tip: TELL YOUR FRIEND ABOUT YOUR URGE TO CHEAT. This (1) makes you accountable to someone outside of your partnership, (2) presents a great opportunity for advice from someone you trust, and/or (3) validates and affirms your boredisappointment without getting an STD.

2. Cheat on your spouse… with a project.

Why is it that when people cheat, they can always find time to do so — but when it’s a painting or building a zen garden, there are a million things more important?

In an interview for The Rumpus, Elizabeth Gilbert recommends approaching your creative project like it’s a secret lover. “Go have an affair with your book…just get some sexy lavender underwear from the girl in Coyote Ugly and go have a fling with your book.”

If there’s a story you’ve always wanted to write, paint, crochet, or sculpt, find secret times to do so. And if you’re feeling frisky, you’re in luck: from boudoir photography to romance novels to sexy dance classes and more, there’s a whole world of titillating activities for you.

Pro tip: To satisfy your urge for sensual risk, why not pose nude for an art class — or take an art class and draw somebody else? Often, the rush of seeing and/or being seen is enough to satisfy the urge to cheat — or (even better) get over it completely.

Couple On Kitchen

3. Cheat on your spouse… by pursuing a real adrenaline rush.

Try something dangerous; I dare you. Go skydiving or bungee jumping (with a reputable guide, of course). Go ride a horse and fall off. Do that thing in Vegas where you rent a racecar and pretend to be Ricky Bobby. Experts say that spontaneous excitement boosts your dopamine levels, which can satisfy the pleasurable rush you’ve been craving.

Now I’m not a psychic, but I have a feeling that tropical cliff-diving is a lot more worthwhile than fondling some guy you met at a fundraiser. Unless he’s Tom Hardy, he ain’t that cute.

Pro tip: Take your partner with you! You might be surprised with this one. There’s a certain kind of closeness that comes from defying death with a lover. Please don’t risk your life on my account, but… jump out of a plane. See what happens.

4. Actually cheat on your partner…but do it with your partner.

Maybe both of you are boredisappointed, who knows? Perhaps they’re even more boredisappointed than you are, but haven’t discovered LOVE TV yet.  Lucky for them, they have you. Cha-ching!

Instead of thinking about how to stop an affair, think of how you would start one — and then get your partner involved. Surprise them with a naughty email from a private account, or arrange a ‘secret’ tryst with them. Have them meet you on his or her break at work, or after hours at a surprise location. You can go all ‘role-play’ if you want, but trust me — sometimes, doing something that feels forbidden and secretive is the best way to feel like your true self.

Pro tip: Sexting isn’t just for single Millennials. Worst sext-case scenario, you can just send each other sexy spoofs and laugh about it. At least then you’ll both be smiling.

To have a good relationship, you need to take care of yourself.

You can stop an affair before it begins by acknowledging that your needs for novelty, excitement, play, emotional satisfaction, or pleasure aren’t being met – and then finding alternate ways of providing these needs for yourself. By all means, include your partner in as much or as little of this as you’d like, but this is on you. There are healthy ways to do this without ruining your life.
